(1) Meetings held in countries of the former Eastern Bloc before the Berlin wall came down in 1989 reflected the original East-West aims of the society. (All the planning and organisation for Leipzig occurred during the "cold war").

The biennial general meetings of ESN (originally held in alternate years to those of ISN) are listed in. It is of interest to see that the principle of holding at least one meeting in three in “Eastern Bloc” countries was more than fulfilled in that 50% were hosted there (Bled, Budapest, Prague and Leipzig) between 1976 and the opening up of European frontiers between East and West. [Although the Berlin wall came down immediately before the 1990 meeting in Leipzig , all of the planning and preparations were carried out during the “cold-war”].

Our Second Meeting in the old University town of Göttingen proved to be a great financial success, due to Volker Neuhoff's entrepreneurial activities, which enabled a special fund to be set up to support the costs of up to three promising young scientists to attend our meetings and present “ESN Honorary Lectures” (competitively assessed by a panel drawn from the Council). Those who attended will treasure their copies of the beautiful drawings of Göttingen by Volker's wife, † Hildegard Neuhoff–Fricke.
